In February 2024, my husband, two close friends, and I explored Girona Old Town, and we were completely charmed by its walkability, history, and atmosphere. We roamed its cobblestone streets, admired impressive churches, and immersed ourselves in the local tapas sceneβ€”learning how to tally up our sticks to pay, just like the locals. Inside medieval walls, we drank fantastic cups of coffee while traversing through time in this magical city.

Step Back in Time: Discovering Girona Old Town

Girona Old Town, or Barri Vell, is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in Europe. Walking through its narrow, winding streets feels like stepping into another era and it’s no wonder that it’s worldwide acclaim made it a primo filming location for the 6th season Game of Thrones in 2015.

Girona Cathedral: A Majestic Gothic Masterpiece

Start your journey at the iconic Girona Cathedral, a stunning structure with the widest Gothic nave in the world. I was impressed and in awe at the scale of its build from the inside. Climb the steps to admire its grandeur and experience sweeping views of the city.

Jewish Quarter: A Journey Through Girona’s Medieval Jewish Heritage

Next, explore the Jewish Quarter, known as El Call. This well-preserved medieval maze of narrow alleys and hidden courtyards was once home to one of Spain’s most important Jewish communities which dates back to at least 888 but became more prominent in the 12th century. Don’t miss the Museu d’HistΓ²ria dels Jueus (Jewish History Museum) for a deeper understanding of Girona’s rich past.

The Arab Baths: A Glimpse into Girona’s Moorish Past

Visit the Arab Baths (Banys Γ€rabs), a hidden gem that transports you back to the 12th century. Inspired by Roman and Moorish bathhouses, this beautifully preserved structure features an impressive domed entrance, intricate stone arches, and serene bathing chambers. While no longer used for bathing, the site is a fascinating look at medieval hygiene practices and architectural ingenuity.

Wander through the frigidarium, tepidarium, and caldarium, and admire the soft natural light filtering through the oculus above the central pool. A peaceful retreat from the bustling streets, the Arab Baths provide a captivating glimpse into Girona’s layered history.

For panoramic views of Girona, take a walk along the Muralles de Girona, the city’s medieval walls. These well-preserved fortifications date back to Roman times and offer stunning vistas of the Old Town, surrounding countryside, and distant mountains. Climbing the watchtowers along the route provides even better vantage points for photography enthusiasts.
