When you think of Japan, its ubiquitous convenience stores (konbini, コンビニエ) are one of the first things that come to mind. As someone who has made it my mission to visit multiple convenience stores daily since my first trip to Japan at 16, I’m the model expert on the subject. Over the years, I’ve sampled countless snacks at Lawson, Family Mart, and 7-Eleven, making it my goal to discover the best and most unique treats.
If you’re planning a trip to Japan or simply want to indulge in some Japanese convenience store snacks, this guide will take you through the top options at these popular chains.
In Japan, walking and eating at the same time is considered impolite, so it’s better to eat while stationary. Most konbinis have garbage bins, which makes it easy to dispose of waste and keep public spaces tidy, showing respect for the community.

Lawson: Hearty Delights and Comfort Food
Thick and Heavy Pork Ramen
For those who crave a substantial meal, Lawson’s thick and heavy pork ramen is a must-try. This isn’t your average convenience store ramen. Rich, flavourful broth, packed with tender slices of pork, and perfectly cooked noodles = a comforting bowl that’s sure to warm you up, whether you’re grabbing a late-night snack or a quick lunch.
Large Size Onigiri
Onigiri, aka rice balls, are a staple in Japanese convenience stores, and Lawson’s large-size version is perfect for those with a hearty appetite. Stuffed with savoury fillings like seasoned salmon, pickled plum, or seaweed, these onigiri offer a satisfying blend of flavours and textures. They’re ideal for a quick meal on the go and one of my favourite healthy options things to grab from the convenience store.

Grape-style Gummies
Japan offers an exciting array of gummy flavours, from muscat grape and yuzu to lychee, strawberry, melon, and cola. Lawson convenience stores usually stock a diverse selection, making it easy to find your favourite.
A standout is UHA’s Kororo gummies, known for their one-of-a-kind texture and flavour, crafted with grape juice and collagen. These gummies can be peeled just like real grapes, delivering a juicy, fruit-filled experience that feels almost like biting into the real thing!
Family Mart: A Sweet and Savoury Paradise
FamiChicken
Family Mart’s FamiChicken is a standout for fried chicken lovers. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, these bite-sized pieces of chicken are seasoned to perfection. They’re great for snacking or as a side dish with your meal. Although I didn’t personally try the FamiChicken, my husband was definitely a fan!

Melon Pan
This iconic sweet bread, covered with a cookie-like crust, is a Family Mart favourite. The melon pan is soft and fluffy on the inside, with a delightful sweetness that pairs perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee. It’s named for its resemblance to a melon, though it doesn’t actually taste like one.
Bite-Sized Daifuku Smooth Red Bean Paste
A soft, chewy mochi filled with creamy sweet red bean paste. Anyone with a sweet-tooth will love this convenient, bite-sized snack that delivers the perfect taste of traditional Japanese flavours on the go!

Onigiri
Family Mart also offers an immense variety of onigiri, often with unique fillings and seasonings. Whether you opt for a traditional flavour or something more adventurous, these rice balls are a convenient and tasty choice.

7 Ingredients Sukiyaki
If you’re in the mood for something a bit more sophisticated, Family Mart’s 7 Ingredients Sukiyaki is a fantastic option. This pre-made meal includes all the essential elements of sukiyaki—thinly sliced beef, vegetables, and noodles—stirred together in a savoury sauce. It’s a complete and flavourful meal that’s easy to enjoy anywhere.
Custard Taiyaki Fish
Taiyaki is a traditional Japanese fish-shaped cake, and Family Mart’s custard-filled version is a delightful treat. The crispy exterior encases a creamy custard filling, making each bite a little piece of heaven. It’s a perfect snack to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Lemon Mochi
This was my personal favourite find at Family Mart. I loved the bite-sized mochi and this snack was small enough that you could eat it all at once or draw out multiple mochi over the course of a few days to satisfy the sweet tooth.
7-Eleven: Diverse and Delicious Offerings
Smoothies
7-Eleven’s smoothies are a refreshing choice, especially in the warmer months. Made with real fruit and available in a range of flavours, these smoothies are a great way to cool down and get a quick burst of energy. Tasty and nutritious!
Sandwiches aka Sandos サンド
Japanese convenience store sandwiches often have unique fillings and flavours. At 7-Eleven, you’ll find a variety, from classic ham and cheese to kawaii fruit sandos with cream.
These days the egg sando is having a moment and it was one of the first things we tried when we visited Japan in summer 2024. My husband was an immediate fan and had at least one per day on our trip! They’re perfect for a quick, satisfying meal.

Pizza Steamed Buns
For a fusion twist, try 7-Eleven’s pizza steamed buns. These fluffy buns are like traditional Chinese baozi filled with a gooey mix of pizza ingredients: cheese, tomato sauce, and toppings and something I knew I had to try when I was in Japan!
