The word emoji (絵文字) combines “e” (絵 = picture) and “moji” (文字 = character), resulting in both kawaii (cute) and expressive symbols. And since food culture is tremendous in Japan, many emojis highlight beloved Japanese dishes. 🍤🍜🍠

This triangle-shaped emoji wrapped in seaweed is the humble onigiri (お握り)— Japan’s ultimate grab-and-go snack. Every region has its own spin, and ramen is beloved for its complex flavours beginning with the broth, followed by the toppings and tied together by the noodles for slurp-worthy satisfaction.

The three colours symbolize the order in which cherry blossoms bloom: pink = cherry buds, white = cherry blossoms in full bloom, and green = leafy cherry blossoms after they fall. 

Dango is considered a type of wagashi (和菓子); traditional Japanese confectionery made of plant-based ingredients with an emphasis on seasonality, and is therefore often paired with green tea.
