Nepal is a trekkerβs paradise. From towering peaks to charming villages, this Himalayan nation offers some of the most unforgettable trekking routes in the world. Whether youβre dreaming of reaching Everest Base Camp, exploring the Annapurna Circuit, or taking on a short but scenic trek like Ghorepani Poon Hill, Nepal has trails for every adventurer.
Iβve been fortunate to explore many of these trails personally. I trekked the short 4-day Everest trek in October 2010 with three friends and two Sherpas, carrying just a guitar on my back β and the night we cuddled together in our sleeping bags to stay warm while gazing at the clearest, most breathtaking stars was unforgettable. Later, I hiked Poon Hill just before the rainy season in late May 2022, catching glimpses of Dhaulagiri Peak and witnessing rhododendron forests in full bloom.
And in April 2011, my Upper Mustang trek with friends turned into a once-in-a-lifetime experience when Tibetan locals welcomed us into their home for the night with butter tea, after we got lost searching for a waterfall. These experiences are what make trekking in Nepal so magical.

Everest Region Treks: Legendary Trails in the Himalayas
Everest Base Camp Trek
The Everest Base Camp trek is one of the most famous trekking routes in Nepal, and for good reason. Youβll hike past suspension bridges, prayer flags, and the Sherpa villages of Namche Bazaar and Tengboche before finally standing beneath the worldβs highest peak.

π Recommended gear: trekking poles, down jacket (mens + womens).
Short 4-Day Trek in the Everest Region
If you donβt have time for the full Everest Base Camp journey, you can still experience the magic of the Khumbu region with a short 4-day trek in Nepal. This trek takes you from Lukla through Phakding and Namche Bazaar, offering a taste of Himalayan trekking without the long commitment.

I actually did this trek during the time I lived in Nepal for four years, back in mid-October 2010, with three friends and two local guides β carrying just a guitar on my back. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience: from our final Everest viewpoint, we could see Everest Base Camp in the distance. That night, we had to push four beds together and cuddle in our sleeping bags just to stay warm! Yet the skies above were crystal clear, and the stars I saw at that altitude were some of the most breathtaking Iβve ever witnessed.

π Recommended gear: Daypack with hydration system, lightweight base layers (mens + womens), compact sleeping bag liner.
Gokyo Lakes Trek: Turquoise Beauty in the Everest Region
For a unique alternative to the classic Everest Base Camp trek, the Gokyo Lakes trek is stunning. The turquoise lakes set against snow-capped peaks are absolutely breathtaking. The highlight is climbing Gokyo Ri for panoramic views of Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu.

Annapurna Region Treks: Variety and Beauty
Annapurna Circuit Trek
The Annapurna Circuit trek is a classic, taking 2β3 weeks as you circle the Annapurna range. Itβs famous for its diverse landscapes: lush subtropical forests, high alpine passes, and Tibetan-style villages. Crossing Thorong La Pass at 5,416 metres is a bucket-list achievement. This is one of the best trekking routes in Nepal for those who want variety and cultural encounters along the way.

π Recommended gear: hiking boots (mens + womens), hydration pack.
Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek
For a shorter option, the Ghorepani Poon Hill trek is perfect. In just 3β4 days, you can witness one of the best sunrises in the Himalayas over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. This trek is accessible, making it one of the top short treks in Nepal and ideal for those with limited time.

My husband and I did this trek just before the rainy season, from late May to June 2022. While we didnβt get perfectly clear views every day, catching a glimpse of Dhaulagiri Peak was absolutely breathtaking. For those wanting to see the region at its most vibrant, I recommend going a bit earlier in the season when the rhododendron forests are in full bloom β itβs truly a spectacular sight.

Highlights from our trek included bonding with our personable guide Tsering Sangpo Sherpa from Ska Adventures, getting drenched in the rain before warming up with local fermented rice pudding (pa-ge) by the stove in a teahouse, sharing Nepali songs with madal and guitar, donning traditional Gurung dress in Gandruk, savouring Sherpa dishes like tingmo and shabhaley, and enjoying deep conversations along the trail from Tikedhunga to Pokhara Lakeside.

π Recommended gear: Lightweight hiking shoes (mens + womens), compact camera tripod, headlamp.

Langtang Valley Trek: Close to Kathmandu
The Langtang Valley trek is one of the most underrated Nepal hiking trails. Just a few hoursβ drive from Kathmandu, itβs a 7β10 day trek that passes through yak pastures, glacial valleys, and Tamang villages. This is one of the best off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal if youβre looking for a quieter trail with incredible scenery.

π Recommended gear: thermal layers (womens + mens), daypack.
Mustang Trek: The Forbidden Kingdom
The Upper Mustang trek takes you into a dramatic landscape of cliffs, caves, and Tibetan culture. Restricted for centuries, this region feels like stepping back in time and is one of the most unique trekking routes in Nepal, ideal for travellers seeking both adventure and culture.

I had the incredible opportunity to do this trek in April 2011 with four friends β and yes, I carried my guitar the whole way!

One night, we got lost while trying to find a waterfall and ended up knocking on a strangerβs door. Tibetan locals welcomed us in, shared butter tea, fed us, and let us sleep there for the night. The following day, we flew back to Pokhara with Agni Airlines, reflecting on one of the most endearing and unforgettable experiences of my life.

Best Time to Trek in Nepal
The best time to trek in Nepal is generally autumn (SeptemberβNovember) and spring (MarchβMay). These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather, and comfortable temperatures. Winter treks are possible at lower altitudes, while summer (monsoon) treks are lush but can be muddy and leech-prone.
