Peyrepertuse Castle is a must-visit for lovers of history, scenery, and off-the-beaten-path adventures. One of the largest and most atmospheric Cathar fortresses, it offers panoramic views, intriguing ruins, and a hike that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a medieval legend.
In February 2024, my husband, two friends, and I visited this epic site as part of a winter road trip from Carcassonne. We rented a car, bundled up against the biting wind, and hiked to the top—an experience that was both wild and unforgettable.

How to Get to Peyrepertuse Castle from Carcassonne
The castle is located in Duilhac-sous-Peyrepertuse, about 1.5 hours by car from Carcassonne. Public transportation is limited, so renting a car is the best way to reach it. I recommend DiscoverCars or RentalCars as you can easily book them online before or during your trip.
We rented our vehicle in Montpellier and drove to Carcassonne the previous day as we had taken the long train trip south from Paris prior to this road trip. You could easily do the same or rent a car in Carcassonne. We took the scenic route through Maury and Cucugnan, winding through dramatic gorges and vineyards. Parking is free and located at the base of the trail.

💡 Travel Tip: Optimize your road trip with handy accessories like a phone mount to navigate GPS hands-free, French road map, and portable charger.

Hiking Up to Peyrepertuse Castle
After parking, prepare for a moderate 30-minute uphill hike. The path is rocky and uneven in places but well-marked. In winter, it can be slippery with frost or rain, so proper footwear is essential.

For the best experience, I recommend:
- Hiking boots with ankle support for men + women
- Lightweight daypack
- Windproof/waterproof jackets for men + women
- Trekking poles (especially helpful on the descent)

Exploring the Castle Ruins
Peyrepertuse spans multiple levels, with crumbling walls, narrow staircases, and sweeping lookouts over the Aude valley and nearby Château de Quéribus.

🏰 Must-sees inside the fortress include:
- Saint-Louis Staircase carved into the rock
- Chapel ruins and watchtowers
- 360° views on a clear day, all the way to the Mediterranean

Give yourself 2–3 hours to explore fully and take breaks to soak in the views.

What It’s Like Visiting in February
In February 2024, the four of us experienced wild, icy winds 🌬️ that cut straight through our layers. The cold was intense but made the landscape feel even more remote and dramatic—like something out of a fantasy novel.

We were glad we packed:
- Thermal base layers for men + women
- Gloves, scarves, and beanies
- Windproof jackets
- Snacks and a thermos with hot tea

Despite the cold, the solitude made it magical. We had most of the castle to ourselves and found refuge from the wind behind stone walls and ruins.

Best Time to Visit Peyrepertuse Castle
Season | Pros | Cons |
---|---|---|
Summer (Jun–Aug) | Clear skies, extended hours | Crowds, heat |
Fall (Sep–Nov) | Cooler temps, golden views | Shorter days |
Winter (Dec–Feb) | Peaceful, dramatic | Cold, windy, limited hours |
Spring (Mar–May) | Wildflowers, mild weather | Occasional rain |
If you’re up for a rugged winter adventure like we were, February offers a unique and uncrowded experience. Just dress accordingly!
