Visiting Paris, France for the first time is an unforgettable experience, but deciding where to stay can feel overwhelming.

The city’s unique layout, shaped like a spiral or “snail,” with its 20 arrondissements winding outward from the Seine River, offers manifold options to suit every traveller’s preferences.

As a Francophile myself, with French roots in my blood, and relatives in Paris, I fall in love with the City of Lights each time I visit (thrice thus far!) Known for its lively atmosphere, charming laneways and cobblestone streets, and historical significance, this neighbourhood is home to iconic landmarks like the Panthéon, the Sorbonne, and the beautiful Jardin des Plantes. Its name derives from the Latin language that was taught here in the Middle Ages and to this day boast several used bookstores for intellectuals and bookworms of all kinds to explore.

If you’re looking for a romantic and artistic atmosphere, Montmartre in the 18th arrondissement is an excellent choice. Once the stomping ground of famous artists like Picasso and Monet, this hilltop district still exudes prime bohemian charm.

I’ll preface by saying that as an Amélie Poulain fan, I absolutely adore staying in and exploring this aesthetic district and historic stomping ground of writers and musicians.

The famous Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral, an incredible example of Gothic architecture, and the cultural centre Centre Pompidou which houses the National Museum of Modern Art are my top recommendations in the area.
